As for most other free-machining stainless steels the improvement in machinability is achieved by
addition of sulphur which forms manganese sulphide inclusions.
416 Stainless Steel material offered by Beall Industry Group is a martensitic free machining grade of stainless. Due to its low cost and ready machinability, 416 stainless steel is readily used in its highly tempered state. It exhibits better machining characteristics than austenitic grades, however, sacrifices corrosion resistance. Since stainless steel 416 is free of high sulfer content it is not suitable for marine or any chloride exposure situations. We can supply our 416 stainless steel for any project big or small.
430F should be considered when making machined articles from a 17% chrome steel. Type 430F does not harden by heat treatment. It has been used in automatic screw machines for parts requiring good corrosion resistance such as aircraft parts, gears, etc. Type 430F is not recommended for vessels containing gases or liquids under high pressure.
Grade 303 represents the optimum in machinability among the austenitic stainless steels. It is primarily used when production involves extensive machining in automatic screw machines. Machinability Rating is approximately 78%.The sulphur addition which is responsible for the improved machining and galling characteristics of Grade 303 lowers its corrosion resistance to below that of Grade 304. As for other austenitic grades the structure gives 303 excellent toughness, although the sulphur in 303 reduces its toughness slightly.Grade 303Se (UNS S30323) has a selenium rather than sulphur addition, improving the hot and cold forming characteristics over those of 303 and providing a smoother machined surface finish.
